New York City is home to more sights and tourist attractions of note than pretty much any other city in the world, with the possible exception of London. Whilst it is virtually impossible to see them all there are some things that you really should see above and beyond the rest. This list of 6 New York City attractions that will totally blow your mind gives you the lowdown on which ones they are.
Times Square
Nestled in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, Times Square is the heartbeat of the city. Referred to by many as \’The Crossroads of the World\’ and \’The Center of the Universe\’ this major commercial center is a cacophony of bright lights and bustling sound. Believed to be the world\’s most popularly visited tourist attraction, due partly to the sheer number of people who congregate there for the annual ball drop on New Year\’s Eve, the area features such tourist attractions as ABC\’s Times Square Studios, where Good Morning America is broadcast live, M&Ms and Hershey\’s stores, the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company and the Planet Hollywood Restaurant and Bar. In addition notable signage includes the Toshiba billboard, the NASDAQ sign and the slightly curved Coca-Cola sign.
Statue of Liberty
Probably the most famous icon in the whole of America let alone New York, The Statue of Liberty is a must see. Gifted to the gift to the United States from the French in 1886 the statuesque torch bearing representation of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, dominates New York Harbour. A visit to Liberty Island and nearby Ellis Island by ferry is a treat itself but the views of the statue as you approach it as well as the Manhattan skyline, and if you are really lucky, the sun setting on the harbour are quite magnificent.
New York Public Library
The second largest public library in the United States, and the third in the world, with almost 53 million items, the New York Public Library is a fascinating place to visit. A grandiose marble Beaux Arts style building that was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965, the library has features the famous Rose Main Reading Room, as well as a number of impressive pieces of art, design and ornaments. Located on Fifth Avenue, at its intersection with 42nd Street, it is also a good place to visit for some peace and quiet when the frenetic nature of New York life starts to get on top of you!
Brooklyn Bridge
Completed in 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge imperiously spans the East River. Connecting Manhattan with Brooklyn the former longest suspension bridge in the world, which covers the best part of 1596 feet, is yet another of New York\’s National Historic Landmarks. A tremendous structure which was also the world\’s first steel-wire suspension bridge, a stroll across the bridge reveals sensational views of the Manhattan Skyline and the encompassing area you simply won\’t be able to get elsewhere.
Central Park
Extending for about half a mile in width between Fifth Avenue and Central Park West, and for around 2.5 miles in length between Central Park South, at 59th Street, and Central Park North, on 100th Street, Central Park is probably the most famous city park in the world. A National Historic Landmark that features a stunning mix of lush lawns, picturesque lakes, ornate bridges and fountains, rustic amphitheatres, impressive monuments and thousands of leafy trees the park also has a substantial number of walking tracks and bridle paths, as well as two ice-skating rinks, the Central Park Conservatory Garden, the Central Park Zoo, a wildlife sanctuary, the legendary Belvedere Castle and the iconic Carousel. It is the kind of place you could easily spend 2-3 days in.
The Empire State Building
The American Society of Civil Engineers labelled it one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and for forty years The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world. A spectacular Art Deco structure that stands 102 storeys high and dominates Midtown Manhattan the panoramic views of the city from its 86th floor observation deck are simply magnificent.
Although these five suggestions should top everyone\’s list of what to see in New York if you do have more time you should also consider visiting Wall Street, Harlem, Greenwich Village and Chinatown.
