Many people can remember going to their grandmother’s house, when they were a child, and studying Grandma’s knick-knack collection. Many times, most of her collection was made up of several pieces of glass art in different forms. With each special occassion a new piece would be added to her collection, which made it all that much more special to her. The trend of giving pieces of glass artware is one that still continues to this day, it also leads one to ask; why are artistic pieces made from glass so popular?
Fascination with glass artware is something that begun with the developement of glass itself, especially when it was discovered what the possible effects of applying heat to glass could have. Heat can not only transform the shape of glass but the color as well, leaving the door wide open for a new medium of artistic expression. Later, experimentation with the art form known as ‘glass blowing’ proved to be a way of controlling the range of size and shapes that could be yielded from a piece of glass.
Part of the facsination with glass art is the opportunities that it can yield for a personalized piece of art work. Thanks to the art of glass blowing a piece of plain glass can be transformed into a unique and special piece that reflects the individual’s taste and sense of style per their request. Even people who collect a certain theme; such as dolphins, for example, find they are also collecting glass artware due to the fact that no two pieces of art that are produced are exactly alike. Many people like this aspect of collecting artistic glass pieces, because each piece is an original piece that can never be copied exactly the same as the next piece.
Even the methods used in producing glass artware is something of a unique art onto itself. Many people love to watch in fascination as a piece is produced, because the technique is so unusual. Watching as an artist takes a piece and begins the process of blowing the glass and then twisting and shaping in order to give it the shapes and designs they see in the glass, can be such a mesmerizing site that one can spend hours watching it without realizing how much time has passed.
Another reason this art form holds so much fascination for people is because of the sense of timelessness it possessess. With the hustle and bustle of today’s fast paced world, many people like the idea of one true artistic medium that has not given way to mass production or found a way to speed the process up. Although there are some pieces that are mass produced, the true pieces of blown glass artware are still produced using the old techniques and ways of the past. This gives people the sense of stepping back into the past as they watch the artist at work.
Glass art is a form of artistic expression that never seems to change. This could possibly be why so many people like collecting the pieces; because they know they were not produced on an assembly line. Owning one of these pieces truly gives you the chance to have a unique and special piece that no one else has. So enjoy your art.
